Security Camera Buyers Guide

Indoor and outdoor surveillance cameras differ mainly in their protection ratings.

  • IP Rating (Ingress Protection): This rating shows how well the camera is protected from dust and water. For example, an IP67 rating means the camera is dust-tight and can withstand being submerged in water up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes.
  • IK Rating (Impact Protection): This rating indicates how much impact the camera can handle. It measures the camera's durability against physical blows.
Indoor cameras usually don't have these ratings since they are used in controlled environments. Outdoor cameras have these ratings to ensure they can withstand weather conditions and potential vandalism.

Wireless outdoor security cameras connect to your network via Wi-Fi, but they can be powered in different ways: through a power cable, a rechargeable battery, or a combination of solar power and a battery.

  • Power Options: The camera might need to be plugged in, have its battery recharged regularly, or use solar panels to stay powered.
  • Battery-Powered Issues: Cameras that rely solely on batteries may face performance issues, which could be problematic for some users.

Most outdoor security cameras come with night vision, but their effectiveness varies.

  • Sensor Size: The camera's sensor size affects how well it captures images in low light. Larger sensors (e.g., 1/1.8") generally perform better at night than smaller ones (e.g., 1/3").
  • Light Sources: Night vision relies on either external light sources like streetlights or the camera's built-in infrared (IR) light.
  • Smart IR: This feature adjusts the IR light intensity based on the distance of the object, preventing close objects from appearing too bright.

An IP (Ingress Protection) rating shows how well a camera is protected from dust and water.

    • IP rating: Represented as IP##, where the first digit indicates protection against solids and the second digit indicates protection against water. For example:
      • IP66: Dust-tight and protected against strong water jets.
      • IP67: Dust-tight and can withstand being submerged in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes.
      • IP68: Dust-tight and can handle being submerged deeper and for longer periods.

The IK rating measures how much impact a camera can withstand.

Ranges from 0 to 10, with higher numbers indicating better protection against impacts. IK10 cameras are often labeled as vandal-resistant but can only withstand impacts up to 20 joules.
      • Waterproof: Usually refers to cameras with IP65, IP66, or IP67 ratings, meaning they can handle water jets or brief submersion.
      • Weatherproof: Typically means an IP rating of IPX2 or higher, protecting against water falling at an angle.
      • An IP65 rating or higher is recommended for outdoor use to ensure the camera can withstand various weather conditions.

        Hikvision

Hikvision and Dahua are two leading brands in the surveillance industry. While both offer a wide range of high-quality security cameras, Hikvision is known for its extensive product range and advanced AI capabilities, whereas Dahua excels in innovative solutions like HDCVI technology. The choice between the two depends on specific needs such as budget, required features, and compatibility with existing systems.

While Hikvision and Dahua products are primarily designed to work within their respective ecosystems, many of their devices support the ONVIF protocol, which allows for interoperability between different brands. However, for the best performance and full feature access, it's recommended to use cameras and NVRs from the same manufacturer.

To reset a Hikvision IP camera to factory settings, locate the reset button on the camera. Press and hold the reset button for about 10-15 seconds until the camera restarts. This will reset the camera to its default settings.

To update the firmware, download the latest firmware file from the Hikvision official website. Access the camera's web interface via its IP address, log in, navigate to the maintenance or settings section, and upload the firmware file. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.

For connectivity issues, ensure the camera is properly powered and connected to the network. Check your router settings, including firewall configurations. You can also try resetting the camera and updating its firmware. For persistent issues, consult the Hikvision support team or refer to the user manual.

Hikvision cameras can be powered via Power over Ethernet (PoE) or through a separate power adapter. PoE simplifies installation by using a single cable for both power and data transmission, while traditional power adapters require a nearby electrical outlet.

        Dahua

Yes, Dahua cameras can be viewed remotely using the Dahua mobile app, DMSS (Digital Mobile Surveillance System). The app is available for both iOS and Android devices and allows for live viewing, playback, and notifications.

To update the firmware, download the latest firmware file from the Dahua official website. Access the camera's web interface via its IP address, log in, navigate to the maintenance or settings section, and upload the firmware file. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.

Dahua cameras are equipped with infrared LEDs that provide night vision capabilities. The range and quality of night vision vary by model, with some cameras offering up to 100 meters of night vision in complete darkness.

        HiLook

HiLook cameras, a sub-brand of Hikvision, typically support resolutions up to 4MP (1440p) and 8MP (4K), depending on the model. Always check the specific product specifications for detailed information.
Yes, HiLook cameras are compatible with third-party software that supports the ONVIF protocol. This allows integration with various VMS (Video Management Software) platforms. However, using HiLook's own software ensures full feature compatibility.

To configure motion detection on a HiLook camera, log in to the camera's web interface, navigate to the event or alarm settings section, and enable motion detection. Set the detection area and sensitivity according to your preferences, and save the settings.

        EZVIZ

To add an EZVIZ camera to your home Wi-Fi network, download the EZVIZ app from the App Store or Google Play. Create an account or log in, then follow the in-app instructions to add a new device by scanning the QR code on the camera and connecting it to your Wi-Fi network.
Yes, many EZVIZ cameras are compatible with voice assistants such as Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. You can use voice commands to view camera feeds on compatible devices like Echo Show or Google Nest Hub.
EZVIZ cameras support multiple storage options, including local storage via microSD card, cloud storage, and network video recorders (NVRs). The specific options available depend on the camera model.
